Network Engineer
The Cyprus Research and Academic Network (CYNET), is seeking to recruit a capable and motivated Network Engineer to join its team. The successful candidate must have solid knowledge of IP networking, routing protocols, and carrier‑grade infrastructure. The Network Engineer will be responsible for the planning, operation, and maintenance of CYNET’s backbone and customer connections, ensuring reliable and secure services to the research and education community of Cyprus.
Duties and Responsibilities:
· Configure, operate, and maintain CYNET’s backbone routers, switches, and firewalls.
· Manage BGP peering with international and national partners, including GÉANT and upstream ISPs.
· Support L2/L3 connectivity services, including MPLS, VPNs, VLANs, and dedicated circuits.
· Monitor backbone network performance and ensure high availability.
· Troubleshoot and resolve complex network incidents and performance issues.
· Plan and execute capacity upgrades (10G, 40G, 100G links).
· Manage customer connections and ensure service provisioning for institutions.
· Implement and maintain network security controls, including DDoS mitigation solutions.
· Document network topology, configurations, and operational procedures.
· Participate in the development of new services (eduroam, eduGAIN, VPN, cybersecurity services).
· Collaborate with GÉANT, other NRENs, and national operators on interconnection projects.
· Participate in incident response and on-call rotations as required.
Academic-Professional Qualifications / Work Experience:
· BSc in Computer Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Science, or related field.
· 3–5 years’ experience in network engineering, preferably in ISP or carrier environments.
· Hands-on experience with BGP, OSPF, MPLS, and IPv4/IPv6.
· Familiarity with Juniper and/or Cisco service provider platforms (MX, NCS, ASR, etc.).
· Solid understanding of routing policies, traffic engineering, and peering practices.
· Practical experience with firewalls, VPNs, and RADIUS servers.
· Experience with monitoring platforms (Zabbix, Nagios, Flowmon, or similar).
· Scripting and automation knowledge (Python, Ansible) considered an asset.

Other Preferred Experience:
· CCNA or equivalent networking certification (preferred).
· Experience managing network protocols and services (DHCP, DNS, SNMP, etc.).
· Knowledge of DWDM, optical transport, and carrier Ethernet.
· Experience with MANRS, ISO 27001, or NIS2 compliance frameworks.
· Exposure to cybersecurity principles and network security operations.
· Experience with virtualized environments and cloud interconnects.
